On Friday, 27 January, Islington Carers Hub relaunched their monthly support groups as Let’s Talk Carers! Let’s Talk Carers is a monthly get together for anyone who looks after a friend, partner or relative in Islington.
Around 50 carers attended January’s meeting at the Islington Town Hall, with more joining on Zoom. Torps Boukens, Islington Carers Hub Team Leader, provided an introduction and set out the ambitions for Let’s Talk Carers to create an active network of Islington unpaid carers.
More info in the Let’s Talk Carers interview that she gave to Islington Life last month here.
Suggestions – Keep Them Coming!
Those who attended provided great suggestions for upcoming events such as more mental health talks, advice for new carers, handling challenging behaviours and lots more! If you weren’t able to attend and would like to share any ideas for activities, trips, workshops, training, guest speakers or even venues, we’d love to hear from you! Email us on info@islingtoncarershub.org. We are looking forward to many more in-person events and appreciate all the suggestions left by those who attended!
Self-Compassion
This discussion was followed by a self-compassion session – specifically for carers! Compassion and self-love are especially important for carers as they give much of their love and patience to the person they care for. It was led by Catherine Powell, who has 25 years’ experience in meditation and is a parent carer herself.
This event was an important reminder that loving oneself is hugely important in being the best carer they can be. Those who attended even chimed in with helpful reminders such as the importance of being easy on yourself, forgiving yourself, and taking time for you.
More Let’s Talk Carers
This event was a relaunch, meaning there are more to come! We plan to move forward with more hybrid events (in person and Zoom), presentations and activities. In addition, we are looking to do events on different days and at different times to ensure all those who want to attend, will be able to attend regardless of schedules plan for each quarter. The programme will be sent out by post for those who are not on email.
Let’s Talk Carers: Wed, 15 February, 2-3.30pm
Upper Holloway Baptist Church, N7 and on Zoom
At our February Let’s Talk Carers we’ll be discussing how to best share the needs of the person that you’re caring for with social care professionals. Find out about your rights and the law that underpins them – it should help boost your confidence when talking about what you think would help. There will also be plenty of time for a cuppa and to chat to other carers. We look forward to meeting you! Booking is essential, so please email us (attend in person) or email us (attend via Zoom) or call our helpline 020 7281 3319.
