What is a Carer’s Assessment?
A Carer’s Assessment is a structured conversation to see if there’s anything that can make your life easier as a carer. It is free and anyone over 18 years old can ask for one. We can arrange for you to have a Carer’s Assessment after you register with us, at a time that’s convenient for you in the weeks to follow.
During the assessment, you’ll have a chance to talk about the care you provide and the impact it has on your life. This includes how it affects your physical and mental health, work, free time and relationships.
The assessment can be by phone or face-to-face and usually lasts about an hour.
Following the assessment, we will let you know about the support you could get and who would provide it.
Why have a Carer’s Assessment?
A Carer’s Assessment might recommend things such as the following:
- Advice on benefits for carers and people being supported
- Help with applying for a Blue Badge, Freedom Pass or taxi card
- A referral for the person you care for, if they need support from Adult Social Services
- Support through a direct payment or breaks grant, if approved, to get a break from caring or to reduce stress
- Connecting you with local support group.
Following a Carer’s Assessment, you might also be able to get things like a parking permit for the area where the person you care for lives. You will still need to pay for one, but it gives you the option to get one.
